(A.K.A. GERSHON PALEVSKI)
Born in the industrial city of Zaporizhzhya, Ukraine in the family of Lithuanian Jews, Gershon always had a creative mind always expressing his complex and uncommon view of the world around him in drawings and writings. In mid-seventies, after graduating an Architectural School in Dnipro, he moved to Vilnius, Lithuania, to reconnect with the land of his parents and grandparents. At that time, both countries were part of the Soviet Union, and because of his background, Gershon had profound understanding of the inhumanity and injustice of the communist regime. In 1981 his family was able to escape the oppressive USSR and to emigrate to USA. Gershon successfully reestablish himself as an architect practicing his profession in New York, New Jersey and California. Visual art was constant passion of the matured design professional. Embracing the emerging digital technology, he utilizes the computer added design and 3-D computer graphics designing new buildings and renovating existing structures. Growing on traditions of Russian Constructivism and Western Modernism, his passion was post-modernism and rationalism, which was evident in his design work.
Influenced by existentialism of Dostoevsky and Camus and abstract expressionism of Willem de Kooning and Francis Bacon. The expressive qualities and subjectivity of Gershon’s artwork allows for countless interpretations based on the mood and perceptions of the viewer. Some of the images are clearly recognizable as a tangible object with many elements transformed to the pure abstraction. Depiction of a female figure is dominating the artist’s latest work. The outlined femininity of the curves and warm color palette for the flesh emphasize the sensuality of the model pose and fascination with their nudity.
Gershon returned to the visual art much later in his carrier, mixing his skills of using pencil and brush with virtuality of digital drawings and computer rendering. In his paintings, the multiple layers of textures, colors and lines reflect the multifaceted life of the artist and his lifelong journey to the freedom of expression and personal independence.
